This milestone event showcases India’s dedication to self-reliance in defense.
Named after a peak in the Eastern Ghats of Odisha, Mahendragiri is the latest creation under Project 17A Frigates, a visionary initiative to build a fleet of cutting-edge stealth guided-missile frigates. The Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau has masterfully designed these vessels, aligning with India’s ‘Aatma Nirbharata’ commitment. A remarkable 75% of the equipment and systems are sourced from indigenous entities, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Project 17A has already witnessed the launch of the Nilgiri in 2019 and the Vindhyagiri on August 17. This endeavor marks India’s strides in becoming self-sufficient in defense technology and enhancing domestic capabilities. The recent approval by the Defence Acquisition Council for 26 Rafale Marine aircraft, additional Scorpene submarines, and more further underlines India’s determination to secure its naval prowess and boost the domestic industry.
Stay tuned for the Mahendragiri’s maiden voyage, a testament to India’s indigenously developed maritime power and its unwavering commitment to maritime security.
